Climbing the walls

Climbing exercises all the major muscle groups of the body, while it helps to develop children's coordination and concentration.Shrubs KLATRETRE is a decorative climbing wall consisting of stylized branches that can be combined in any way. One can create their own personal klatretre and mount it on the wall. The tree comes unassembled with assembly more suggestions inspired by the Norwegian woods.

The product is intended for children from 3-10 years, but can also be used to hold on for smaller children who are learning to walk, or hooks for hanging clothes and bags for the older children and adults.

Eva's Bed...by H2O ARCHITECTS, France

This project by H2O Architects, is an elevated child’s bed that also forms a partition and play area in a Paris residence. The structure includes shelves, steps, hidden compartments  for the children to play in and around.



This Project was completed in 2009. But the design is a case study to all intending to divide spaces for their kids. The structure minus the sharp edges plus some customization can prove to be a magical space provider for those with high ceiling and less floor space.

The first glimpse may be a bit confusing but it will be quickly followed by nodding of the head and appreciation of the design.

As per H2O Architects'....With the arrival of a new baby in the family, a young couple pressed for space decided to divide a room into two parts. The idea was to provide a personal space to each child. The project answers to this request of separation by adding a third space making the partition..... . 

.....The creation of a “multiple-use furniture” in the middle of the space allows to add some depth to the primary basic partition. It afford passages, secret storage, bed, office... in a fun way. The new partition is porous creating steps, cavities and niches which suggests many possibilities for climbing, hiding, drawing.Mainly fun!

Coffee table that doubles up as a dollhouse

 Check out this coffee table from  Ouabis Haus that doubles up as a dollhouse.

By easy addition of sliding panels the dollhouse can be divided into smaller rooms. Designer Amy Whitworth  also has created magnetic wood furniture, which is made of oak wood and is handcrafted to perfection. The furniture is embedded with magnets which allow the furniture to be transformed into desired shape. The video gives you an idea of how fabulous this product is.

I would love this for an aspiring architect/designer. Can see years of fun and creativity. Simply awesome for a playroom or a family room.

Make it worldly!!!

Challenged by an empty space on the wall, why not hang a map. Whether it’s a vintage print of your favorite city or a wall-size illustration of the world, a map can bring graphic punch to a room and at the same time make it more personal. In kids room decor, incorporating maps in the design is one of the best example of funtional and interactive design. Besides it is not gender specific and is cool for all ages.

Just because you're decorating with maps doesn't mean you are limited in the style or colors you can incorporate into your child's bedroom. via

Indoor FUN !!

Your are lucky if you have a playroom for some indoor fun. But here are some ideas to make a part of your bedroom ready for some indoor action.

Interactive compact spaces

In my last post I spoke about indoor play stuctures like play sets and playhouses for those who  live in a cold place or where it rains almost 24 X 7 or for those who just want to infuse fun in their kids rooms. These structures spacially divide the space for sleep, play and study.
A good design could include all this even in the tiniest of rooms, so a usual sized room can acomodate these.

 Here are how some designers  took this idea and did that in smaller spaces.......

This Pirate's Cog from Haba is a compact design for loads of fun followed by restfull sleep.

The space saving MONTEREY bunk bed from Woodland has most of the things an outdoor play set would have. A slide, a ladder a nice pully and ofcourse a bunk bed.

This is a design from a Russian design studio has very nicely created an active zone with rope ladder, monkey bars etc. with soft cushioning below.

 Your designer could  integrate indoor climbing ladder, a slide and even a sliding pole in their kid's room.  A place where they are happy to burn some energy while you get some peace time.

If you live in a cold place or where it rains almost 24 X 7, you understand the practicality of indoor play structures where your kids can be active. Some parents  and designers  took this idea further and integrated indoor climbing ladder, a slide and even a sliding pole in their kid's room. If more kids had these, maybe they would play more in the real world than in the digital world. 

These awesome creations from Cedarworks truly will inspire you to consider having one of these in your kids play room or bedroom. They have designed some awesome playsets....

playbeds where kids can play by day and sleep in the night. 

So rain or snow kids can have a ball..in their homes

I have come across a lot of parents who want a bunk bed in their single kid's room just for them to have fun and play in and have a regular bed to sleep on.
An excellent  alternative to this is to have a play loft. They add the fun element to a otherwise plain room. It not only gives them all the fun of a bunk bed, but also provides a nice nook below. 

This little balcony from hopskoch is great to play Rapunzel or Juliet.  This  kind of play loft can be fit in a room with a regular ceiling height of 8'6" to  9''.

This castle spotted at ohdeedoh is a great place for a knight. And it hardly takes any floor space

Here is an example of a play loft with a rope ladder...fun to climb and fun to be in.

While larger play-lofts are a great idea for a play room, these work well in kids' bedrooms.

Creating Alcoves

As a continuation to my earlier post, " Capitalizing on nooks and crannies " this post will hopefully be helpful to create some nook ( in kiddy world - hidden, secret spaces)to make kids feel they have their own world.
A nice canopy or a play tent from the ceiling or over the bed does the trick. So do allocate a space for their dreamy spot.

While it is usually little girls that clamor for canopy beds to feel like a princess, boys can have designer canopies in the form of tree houses, castles, mansions. Canopies give a sense of security to children(while keeping off insects if need be)

DIY - Kids Art Wall

Lets look at a very creative project by Jen http://cleanandscentsible.blogspot.com/. A great way of displaying kids art projects and holding supplies at the same time. What I liked about this art wall is that it is like an everchanging art museum.

If you love colour as most of us in India do, in your version you could paint the boards keeping the colour scheme of your room in mind or buy some colourful boards.

A swing - Destination for rest and play

When I was little, I had the luxury of swinging in the backyard. I never got tired of it. Infact I used to miss swinging in the rains.

Kids love swinging and what is better then having one in their room. Of course you need to spare enough space that they do not hurt them selves against any other piece of furniture. An indoor swing should be sturdy and should have kids appeal(should be fun).

We have seen these swings in most of the Indian handicraft exhibitions which works just as fine

According to experts "Swinging develops the sense of balance and body perception. It also brings a feeling of well-being and relaxation". Now thats another reason to get one...not that you need any more reasons.
